ABOUT HARRYET EHRLICH:

I'm a 60 year old mother of two grown children: Rebecca and Sarah who has been married for 40 years to my life partner and husband Stuart. I was educated at Montclair State College in Montclair, New Jersey and have a bachelor's and master's in Art Education. I've been an art educator for 26 years and have taught all grade levels from pre kindergarten through 12th grade. For 18 of those years I have worked extensively with multiple disabled children ages 3 - 14 years old with the following disabilities:

  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Down Syndrome
  • Spina Bifida
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Legally Blind
  • Auditorially Impaired
  • Behaviorally Disabled
  • Seizure Disorders
I also taught large numbers of children on the Autistic Spectrum ranging from Pervasive Developmental Delays (PDD) to Asperger's Syndrome. In addition, I worked with children who have rare disorders such as Prader Willie, Charge Syndrome and Moia Moia.

In 2001, I returned to school to earn a Post Master's Art Therapy Specialization. I attended Caldwell College in Caldwell, New Jersey. As part of the requirement to earn this certification I did two internships at highly regarded hospitals. My first practicum was at Don Imus's Tomorrows Children facility located at Hackensack Hospital and Medical Center, Hackensack, New Jersey. I provided art therapy for the patients in their pediatric oncology department. Journeys, a children's bereavement program which is part of the Valley Hospital Health Care System was where I was assigned for my second internship. In this setting, I worked with many of the children from the 9-11 disaster. The program located in Paramus, New Jersey, was home to many families who lost loved ones in the attack.

I retired from teaching at the end of 2003 and I'm now working in the field of art therapy, specializing in children on the autistic spectrum.
